A few days ago folks were worrying about the fact that Google Desktop
Search means the details of the files it's indexed on your PC remain on
Google's servers for 30 days and are thus, in theory, subject to US
subpoenas and general snooping.

Anyone concerned about this might like to investigate
http://www.copernic.com/
which has a free desktop search programme available for download
(Windows only). They guarantee that your data stays on your PC.

The initial indexing seems to take longer than does Google's but after
that it runs searches very fast. It also has far more flexible query
options than does Google and allows you to preview the files it returns
(so you don't have to open half a dozen separate Word documents that
contain your search terms to find the one you wanted).

Or, just remember where you saved your files?

Gaz

The computer will remember that for me. Why keep a dog and bark yourself?
For those rare occasions when Windows Exploder won't find a file, I
use Wingrep. I can't understand what people want to use a desktop
search engine for, anyway. I think it's just a gimmick that people
think they have to have, like ruddy toolbars everywhere. Modern
Windows is such a lot of time-wasting bollocks it's no wonder that
Britain is so unproductive.

I find desktop search engines particularly useful for when I can remember I had some correspondence with someone a year or so ago, but can't remember exactly which letter I sent them is the one to which I need to refer. Yes, I could open each of (e.g.) the half-dozen letters I sent a particular insurance company in connection with my wife's death to find the one I need, but it's a lot easier (and far faster than using Windows 'find') to use a search engine.

Wingrep will do that.

Good for Wingrap. I must check it out.

Steve

Right. I've just downloaded it, and had a shot at finding a company name in all Word documents in My Documents.

It's incredibly slow compared to either Google Desktop or Copernic, which can find the same company name (without being told where to look or what file type to look at) in a fraction of a second.

The reason 'Britain is so unproductive' is more likely people are sitting twiddling their thumbs waiting for Wingrep to find files for them when they could be using a far more efficient tool.
