New cordless phones - VERY dangerous

A new study has just been published in the Journal of Oncology
(February 2006), showing the most convincing evidence yet that long
term usage of mobile and cordless phones may well increase the chance
of getting brain cancer. Usage of analogue mobile phones for longer
than 1 year was found to increase the risk of acoustic neuroma
threefold (OR = 2.9 - 95% CI 2.0-4.3). Both GSM digital phones and
cordless telephones were found to increase the risk by approximately
50% (OR = 1.5 - 95% CI 1.1-2.1 and OR = 1.5 - 95% CI 1.04-2.0
respectively).
It is currently unlikely for a study to find much of an association
between a cause and brain cancer with less than 10 years exposure as it
usually takes at least this long for brain cancer to develop to the
point it is diagnosed. This is one of the first studies thought to be
capable of making a genuine assessment of mobile phone usage for longer
than 10 years.
Initial analysis of the results in the study suggest that there is, on
the whole, a noticeable increase in risk after 5 years of use. For
acoustic neuromas there seems to be little further increase after 10
years, however for all benign tumours grouped together, the increase
with time is significant. The following increased relative risk results
are for GSM phone users who have used their phone for at least 64 hours
in total (i.e. 64 minutes per month over 5 years or 32 minutes per
month over 10 years) and cordless phone users over 195 hours (i.e. 98
minutes per month or 3 minutes each day, averaged over 10 years).
Years of usage
Phone Type 1 - 5 years 5 - 10 years over 10 years
Digital users 1.1 1.5* 1.6
Cordless users 1.2 1.6* 2.1*
The relative risks marked * are statistically significant at 95%
confidence interval
Summary
It appears that there is a very strong and definitive trend in acoustic
neuromas, where even short term usage significantly increases your risk
of developing the tumour, even for digital and cordless phones.
Analogue phones seem to have posed the greatest risk and also show
significant increases in other types of benign tumours, especially with
longer term usage. One concerning finding is the statistically
significant association of all benign brain tumours with cordless phone
use, showing a doubling in risk for more than 10 years use at a very
low average use per day. As the average latency time for these benign
tumours is thought to be 10 years or greater, it would be very helpful
to conduct a larger study in a few years when it is possible to get
both a) a larger sample of long term users of mobile phones, and b) a
longer period of usage for the long term users.

A Phone Mast In Your Bedroom
Hundreds of families are exposing themselves and their children,
families, neighbours, colleagues, people in their care, and even pets,
to continuous pulsed microwave radiation from DECT phones in their
homes and offices without realising the health implications.
Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications DECT are in every sense
mobile phones that come with their own handy base station, and are
viewed by many as an easy and convenient way to receive and make
telephone calls and are promoted as having a range of extended
facilities.
But retail outlets selling these phones are failing to provide any
information on the pulsed microwave radiation the base stations emit
for 24 hours a day even if not in use. Any information inside the box
relating to SAR [1] ratings will only reassure the user about
prevention from microwave heating effects, not the chronic exposure and
biological effects from low level pulsed microwaves.
Furthermore, whilst the Government's own advice is to limit call
lengths on mobile phones, the DECT in the home is the one phone on
which people settle down for a long gossip, ignorant of the fact that
the DECT is even worse than their mobile due to the harmful DECT pulse
rate.
Mast Sanity's Director of Scientific Studies Ingrid Dickenson has been
inundated with calls from people suffering from pressure in their head,
poor sleep, unusual nosebleeds and a range of other medical conditions.
"I take my microwave monitor to their homes and immediately discover
that they have DECT telephones, and sadly many elderly and immobile
people have them next to their beds. The elderly, children and people
with certain neurological conditions and particularly people suffering
from cancer are the most vulnerable to their effects. Often symptoms
like poor sleep and headaches cease with the disposal of the DECT
phones." says Mrs Dickenson.
"Sadly the emissions go through walls and neighbours may be suffering
without understanding why. It's equivalent to being exposed to a mobile
phone mast in your own home and also exposing your neighbour to it. I
would go as far as to say if you live next door to someone with one its
WORSE than being exposed to passive smoking and almost as bad as being
on your mobile 24/7."
Mrs Dickenson is in regular contact with scientists in Germany who have
evidence that children in the vicinity of these DECT phone base
stations suffer the most because the red blood corpuscles don't develop
properly. Elderly people in old peoples' homes and patients in
hospitals may also be exposed if there are DECT phones in use.
"German doctors have acknowledged that these phones cause ill health
effects and launched the Freiburger Appeal which notes DECT phones as
being linked to the increased incidence of certain medical conditions.
British doctors are unable to speak out about the health effects of
pulsed microwave radiation because most of them work for the NHS and
are officially told that mobile technology is harmless. However, in
Germany doctors are paid by the health insurance companies or the
patients themselves and are free to speak out about the health effects
they observe. German health insurance companies don't tolerate
Government interference," says Mrs Dickenson.
Increasingly, people are also being required to use DECT phones at
work. Employers have very little awareness of the problem, and no
health and safety guidance on chronic exposure of their employees to
low-level pulsed radiation. Nor are they aware of the future insurance
implications of harm from the devices. It is of particular concern that
the analogue cordless phone, which only transmits a signal while in
use, is being phased out in favour of the harmful DECT.
Mast Sanity is urging the Department of Health to take up the issue and
make it mandatory for every outlet selling DECT phones to inform the
public of the dangers of pulsed microwave radiation emissions and to
advise them to stop using DECT phones straight away if they or their
neighbours start showing symptoms of ill effects such as headaches,
sleeping disorders, nausea and nosebleeds. This is the very least we
expect from advice leaflets in pharmaceutical drugs and on food
packaging.
END.
Notes for editors
[1] SAR: Specific Absorption Rate: a measure of the heating effect from
microwave radiation.
Analogue cordless phones, with the long antennae, do not transmit
continuously, nor do they pulse - a feature that increases the effects
of microwaves on the living organisms.
Freiburger Appeal
The Freiburger Appeal is an appeal by German medical professionals
-signed by over 2,000 medical doctors and 35,000 individuals. Out of
great concern for the health of our fellow human beings do we - as
established physicians of all fields, especially that of environmental
medicine - turn to the medical establishment and those in public health
and political domains, as well as to the public.
We have observed, in recent years, a dramatic rise in severe and
chronic diseases among our patients, especially:
Learning, concentration, and behavioural disorders (e.g. attention
deficit disorder, ADD)
Extreme fluctuations in blood pressure, ever harder to influence with
medications
Heart rhythm disorders
Heart attacks and strokes among an increasingly younger population
Brain-degenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer's) and epilepsy
Cancerous afflictions: leukaemia, brain tumours Moreover, we have
observed an ever-increasing occurrence of various disorders, often
misdiagnosed in patients as psychosomatic:
Headaches, migraines
Chronic exhaustion
Inner agitation
Sleeplessness, daytime sleepiness
Tinnitus
Susceptibility to infection
Nervous and connective tissue pains, for which the usual causes do not
explain even the most conspicuous symptoms. Since the living
environment and lifestyles of our patients are familiar to us, we can
see, especially after carefully-directed inquiry, a clear temporal and
spatial correlation between the appearance of disease and exposure to
pulsed high -frequency microwave radiation (HFMR), such as:
Installation of a mobile telephone sending station in the near vicinity
Intensive mobile telephone use
Installation of a digital cordless (DECT) telephone at home or in the
neighbourhood. We can no longer believe this to be purely coincidence.
