Like Micawber, John Dickens optimistically expected something to "turn up". When it didn't, he and the rest of the family were sent to a debtors' prison.

All except 12-year-old Charles, who'd had to leave school to work in a boot-blacking factory in London. It was an experience which haunted him for the rest of his life.
