Here's where the world went wrong, as far as abelard is concerned.

There's no doubt that Mr Micawber, with his words of wisdom about the consequences of expenditure exceeding income, was modelled on Dickens' father, a navy pay clerk.
Like Micawber, John Dickens optimistically expected something to "turn up". When it didn't, he and the rest of the family were sent to a debtors' prison.
All except 12-year-old Charles, who'd had to leave school to work in a boot-blacking factory in London. It was an experience which haunted him for the rest of his life. As he later recalled, with its "rotten floors... over-run with rats... the dirt and decay... rise visibly up before me, as if I were there again".
