Illegal immigrants

Is it actually a criminal offence to be an illegal immigrant ? Is
anyone ever actually done for this ?

I was thinking of those Bulgarian ebay fraudsters who are in prison
for the fraud but no mention has been made of prosecutions for just
being here.

Six months in prison before being kicked out might focus the mind if
you are thinking of returning.

The matter's normally dealt with administratively, since when it comes to light -- as in this case -- as a result of some other criminal activity, usually the sentences they receive for that, plus the time spent on remand (bail's almost impossible for an illegal immigrant) will be far greater than anything they get for the immigration offences. ...
