Just driven through Bradford after a day out with family. Encountered the mother of all thunder storms! If anyone knows the area, we were driving up from Greengates towards the ring road and we could see it getting darker the nearer we got to Bradford (and Bradford is 'dark' enough to begin with!!)...weather was very close and humid, and obviously a storm was brewing. We thought we might just make the ring road in time and skirt around the edge of it...WRONG! Within the space of 2 minutes, the weather went from bright, skicky and humid...to near night with torrential rain, howling winds and quite a few bolts of lightning landing too near for comfort. I've been in storms before but to be witness to such a sudden and change in the weather....WOW it was very impressive...and more than a little scary too! I can only imagine what people subject to hurricanes must go through. We were right under it at it's worst and with wipers on full, visibility was virtually zero!
Question - how safe is it to be actually driving in a car in a severe thunder/lightning storm?....I'm talking about danger from the lightning rather than crashing/skidding etc...if a bolt actually struck the car, would the passengers be perfectly insulated? Assuming the lighning could actually get to earth via the sheer amount of water that was on the tyres/road....but as we had the windows up and the inside of the car was not unlike a sauna in the heat....would there be any danger to the occupants? Perhaps any electricians in the NG might offer some opinion?
