If you assume that the Lib Dems support PR because of it would be of
advantage to them then you must assume equally that Labour and Tories
support FPtP because it is advantageous to them.
That strikes me as a reasonable assumption.
Parties have to work within the rules as they find them. Trying to change the
rules so as to secure a different outcome from the same ballot is like arguing
with the umpire.
The rules were not handed to us on stone tablets. They are determined
by law, which is determined by the will of the House of Commons. The
Commons has repeatedly changed the law around how we vote -- sometimes
in small ways, sometimes in big ways -- under both Conservative and
Labour governments. To pretend otherwise is a nonsense.
One should be cautious in changing the rules, yes, but the rules are
man-made and political parties that are busy reforming education,
healthcare, our relationship with Europe, criminal law etc. etc. etc.
are hypocrites if they suddenly decide that reform should not apply to
one aspect of how we vote... that aspect that happens to benefit them
the most.
