The press release said it would be hard, but the lab report says all
they had to do is replay a radio signal repeatedly on the chance that
the device may recognise at least one attempt. Say "Kill" enough times
and only one has to be heard.

The press release says short range only, but it's a radio signal. The
lab used short range, but give it a big enough transmitter... With these
replay attacks you don't need to be able to hear the reply from the device
and do the handshaking. Keep on replaying the message and one may hit.

The lab did indicate that the message was unique to the device in
question, but not encrypted. Is it an ID number in the data? If so, how
many attempts until you guess the right one?

The device was supposed to require a strong magnetic field to turn on
its radio functions, but the lab found that was not needed to receive.

So, an indication that things like this like anything do need to be made
secure. The next question - is it worth someone's time to do this?
