The Little Book of Atheist Spirituality
by Andre Comte-Sponville, Nancy Huston
The problem I find in all this is a definition of spiritual/spirituality.
I've just been reading Singer's very short book on Hegel and he brings
this up in the translation of the title of Hegel's most famous book
'the phenomenology of spirit' -- or that's how it's now usually
translated. But he, and earlier translators, translate it as 'the
phenomenology of mind'. It all comes down to the German Geist having
different meanings in different contexts (plus obfuscators like
zeitgeist making things even worse!)
So really atheist spiritualism is atheist mentalism -- but that's an
awful word! So it's a good idea to retain spiritualism for a reference
to broad mental activities encompassing 'high spirits', appreciation
of beauty...
