The comparison is between what religion offers and what science
offers. Religion offers a benevolent and powerful guardian who can be
loved and worshipped, triumph over death, objective moral guidelines,
etc. It may entail wishful thinking, but it has a powerful appeal.
Science promises truth purchased by the abandonment of comforting
beliefs.
You could equally say: "Science promises truth purchased by the
abandonment of wrongful beliefs."
Then the cost may be worth paying!
Better Socrates unhappy than a pig happy?
But I don't think I'd be happy being a pig, and pursuing truth makes
me happy.
