Science is a culture. The Ptolemeic system of astronomy certainly
allowed some degree of prediction and so was useful (liberatory?) to
those who believed in it. But it was cumbersome and costly to calculate
too, and got in the way of further advances in science. In that sense
believing in it was oppressive. Surely the same could be said for
almost any aspect of culture?
