There is certainly tons of anecdotal evidence to support that! I'd suggest that it is one of the underlying causes of war - cannon fodder

And gullible with it. Cynics tend not to be keen on dying for propaganda.

And cynics join up in the hope of advancement, or of loot and plunder.

Unlike Peter B. I also think that some wars are just, and that people were right to fight in them. Where would the world be if Hitler had been allowed to take over Europe? I suspect that your present freedom from oppression would be far different had Hitler won. So I find myself thinking it sad that you think the sacrifices made by your parents and grand parents for your present safety and freedom are now to be called thought of as "gullible".

Had the drawers up of the Treaty of Versailles been a bit more cynical and agreed with General Smuts then Mr Hitler wouldn't have been able to get such a following. Instead they had some barmy notion that squeezing the Germans until the pips squeaked would make them turn in to nice apologetic and unmilitaristic serfs.

Whatever the reasons once Hitler was on the scene and had been allowed to rearm somebody had to stand up to him. Soldiers often have the feeling that they are being made to clean up politicians messes. But think what the world would be like if those messes could not be cleaned up.

That isn't fair. If you wish to play 'what if' and claim that the war was necessary as an objection to cynicism then it isn't fair to dismiss my 'what if' that shows the advantage of cynicism, as I see it, in avoiding the stupidity of the war.

If everybody refused to fight then there would, of course, be no war - 'everybody' in the case of WWII including Germans, Japanese and Italians.
