IIRC, we discussed the origins of IQ testing a while ago.  I think a French
psychologist, Binet, is usually said to be the founder of IQ tests.  He
began developing them about a century ago, to pick out less able
schoolchildren.  I expect Lance knows the details.


Yes we did discuss this a while back. The English psychologist Spearman was investigating them using a graphical form of factor analysis in the early 1900s, and already claiming that the results indicated a "G" factor. Perhaps Peter is referring to the fact that the first "group" administered IQ tests were developed for the US Army circa WW1.
