The message <ft1rf8$d4o$1@xxxxxxxx>
from "PG" <pgk9@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> contains these words:

However existence, the reason underlying, is something that has concerned
thinkers throughout history, so I would rather be a little more rigorous
with respect to the degree of likelihood of there being an explanation
for
our existence that we have yet to discover. So if the term deity can be
synonymous with a big '?' to put it simply, then I cannot rule out the
possibility. I would add though, that any such vaguely deist concept
would
likely have little or no bearing on human existence, as it would
probably be
completely unaware of and unconcerned with our presence in the first
place.

I am content that there are things I will never know including any
explanation for our existence.

That's pretty much what I am saying.

There does not need to be any
explanation

Matter of opinion. If there is one, and one that we can even begin to
understand, then one day that knowledge could be useful to us.

and there probably isn't one as we just evolved and were not
created.

Don't see the link between those statements

Gods were invented to try and explain the unknown and they
have filled the desire to know the reason for existence for those who
believe in them.

Again, assuming you are only talking about personal creator gods, that is
highly probable imho

It is a human conceit that we are somehow so superior to the rest of the
animals that we must have a soul and eternal life and a divine being
which guides us. There is no basis for such childish beliefs which are
just wishful thinking.

Absolutely

The total absence of any credible evidence for the existence of any god
and every other aspect of worship indicates to me that gods are just
human inventions existing only in the imagination. I can thus say with
total confidence that there are no gods. It is not for me to prove the
non existence of a god but for those who are trying to convince us that
it exists to provide some credible evidence that it does and despite
much trying no one has ever been able to do so.

Absence of evidence doesn't imply absolute proof of a negative, especially
in a metaphysical domain we cannot by definition measure, but I
wholeheartedly sympathise with your view with respect to alleged personal,
creator, interventionist deities. Perhaps we should get on with arguing with
the theists now, seeing as our views, to the naked eye at least, are as good
as a dead heat? ;-)
