No: I would say, don't reply. If they are confused, rather than just
ranting, then point out the confusion but don't address them directly.
They may not show confusion. Often they try and a present a case that
atheism can offer nothing of value, saying it has nothing to base morality
on etc etc. If left unchallenged people that look in may think we have no
answer. I think we should refute such claims and, as you suggest, avoid a
flame war.

I shouldn't have used the word 'confused'. I meant, willing to talk and
listen, as opposed to doing their religious duty, bearing witness, etc.*
People who are interested in dialogue deserve a courteous reply.
However, if they're just proclaiming the religious viewpoint, then I
think it's best to avoid replying to them; you'd simply comment on their
views, but not address them. (After all, they are not really talking to
you.)
How about those people
who absolutely do not believe in God
when they have no idea what it is?
Are they really atheists?

Do you think people who don't believe in XimXim, where XimXim is
something I have just made up, are irrational to disbelieve in it? I
have no idea what XimXim is - and noone has any idea who or what God
is. There is no evidence for God. There is no information available
about God. The Bible and Koran do not give evidence, since they are
authenticated by the very mythical creature they are supposed to
document. The God of the philosophers is as Anthony Kenny pointed out,
an impossible construction having properties than cannot logically
coexist. So God is in no way different from XimXim.

Do we have any reason to be hopeful?
Even in a Nazi concentration camp?
Would it be logical and reasonable?
