When I was proof-reading technical documentation, obviously
'nit-picking' was something to be carried to extreme lengths otherwise
customers or readers might get incorrect information.

Did you take the trouble to proof-read backwards for spelling and then
forward for sense?

(that's the old-fashioned full-on job of proof-reading - which I never
bothered to do, 'cos it's *incredibly* tedious and after all I had a
spelling checker and they catch most spelling errors).

One thing I really, really, REALLY hate is when you can't tell which
character is speaking or to whom :(

It's sometimes exactly the right thing - but only in the case of trippy
psychadelic heavy SF type stuff if you ask me. Most people can't write
that sort of thing.

There are a few sites and groups which offer advice and feedback on
stories written by newbies. They can be a bit difficult to track down
but might be worth it if you want independent, constructive advice. A
word of warning though. Because the aim of these places is to be
supportive, any ratings they assign can be very misleading (eg 9.1 -
dross, 9.5 - average, 9.9 - rather good - against a stated 'average' of 5.0)

I mistrust any attempt to judge writing using a numerical score.

Rowland.
