Give them a little time. They're currently building up their

Erm, nope. Lots of reasons for that. To begin with, China has no
interest in dominating anything at all beyond China.
Look, China considers itself to be the heart and soul of human life and
civilisation, with everything outside China being lesser and not
properly civilised and generally speaking not worth worrying about - why
would China want anything but China?
What China wants is to make lots of money for itself while not being
bothered by anyone.
(Admittedly, the official Beijing opinion about the extent of China's
`natural' geographical extent is not quite the same as that of the Dali
Lama's - but there you go.)
To be getting on with, the period in history when it was possible for a
great superpower to dominate the world with unstoppable might has passed
- if it ever really existed. Britain thought it was in that position in
the late 19th century, until Bismarck called Palmerstone's bluff. The
USA thought it was in that position in the mid 20th century - Vietnam
proved the idea was wrong, but plenty of eejits USAians haven't noticed
yet hence the Iraq debacle.
Very few nations do want to take over the world. What's the point? The
British empire proved that it's not a great way to make money - it's a
way to turn money over while getting half the world to hate you.
<shrug> The USA is better at making money from its current imperialist
attitude than the UK was; on the other hand, the British empire was a
bit better at dealing with the hatred we generated by dominating foreign
countries. The USA might be earning more money, but it's earning more
emnity as well.
The USA is the only non-European nation ever to try the global supremacy
game that I can think of - and how come? Because the USA caught the
empire bug from Europe, mostly Britain. Europe's recovered from the
empire bug, but it seems that the disease is still raging in the USA.
Just because the UK had the world's largest empire, modelled on the
Roman version, and just because the USA is now trying to copy the
British empire (and failing, because the time for empires is long gone),
doesn't mean that China's going to try the same sort of thing itself.
To be carrying on with, China is coming up at the same time as its
neighbour India - neither of them will permit the other to `dominate the
globe. Nor will Russia.
Nor does China have any way to dominate Russia, or India, or Europe, or
Africa, or the Americas. It might well dominate its own local area -
but it can't dominate the nations on its borders, let alone those other
other side of an ocean.
Rowland.
