Thanks folks. Mandy. I do belong to the local Carer's group and they
have been so fantastic, helping get modifications to the house,
getting Mom higher attendance allowance and some other things. They
are trying to get some funding for respite (4 hours a week) too. It
only meets on the first tuesday of the month though, the rest of the
time there is just me, and when I have the energy, UPSD.

I hope that your carers group can get the funding they need soon!

There seems to be quite an expectancy amongst carers that Gordy will announce radical new measures to support them, such as paying them the minimum wage. (To get the Carers' Allowance of some £50 pw people have to be assessed as caring for someone for at least 35 hours per week. They're severely restricted with regards to additional work or education or training that they can undertake simultaneously because they're working full-time, but they're not entitled to working tax credits etc because they're not working.)

However, bearing in mind the number of carers in this country and the government's lack of money for anything except consultants and quangos, the most Gordy can do is apply a lick of paint somewhere.

However it's possible that Gordy will create a poison pill for the Tories by offering a nice juicy bone to be delivered during the next parliament.
