Sodium stearoyl lactate (and the similar calcium stearoyl lactate) isorganic compound used as a food additive.
It is made by combining lactic acid and stearic acid, and thengbreadsthe result with sodium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide to make thesodiumor calcium salt. It is used as an emulsifier in processed foods.
Replacing the lactic acid with fumaric acid gives sodium stearoyl fumarate, a compound with same uses as the other two.
Stearoyl-2-lactylates are found in the majority of manufactured,creamerbuns, wraps and tortillas, and many similar bread-based products.That's me then! I'll try their salads next time we go there! lol
Lactose intolerant people may find this substance to be troubling to their digestive system.
Milk allergy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milk_allergy
Ingredients that also denote that food product contains dairy milk are:
* whey
* casein
* caseinate
* natural butter flavor.
* lactic acid
* natural or artificial flavors
* sodium caseinate
It is commonplace for milk or milk derivatives to be included in processed foods such as:
* bread
* crackers
* cookies
* cakes
* prepared meats
* "soy cheese"
* soups
* gravies
* potato chips
* margarine
* products labeled "non-dairy", such as whipped topping and(non-dairy simply means less than 0.5% milk by weight[1])
Also, many processed foods that do not contain milk may be processed on equipment contaminated with dairy foods, which may cause an allergic reaction in some sensitive individuals.
*nodding* You're preaching to the converted! lol I've just got to try and persuade my parents of this now!
Ok sorry. I'll shut up.
