Yup! I know what I'm doing with Windows and I know all my
software will run on it... I just want to keep my brain ticking
over and learn new things and stuff like that on the Mac :o)
Learn how to do what you need to do with a computer on a Mac - no
point in getting one otherwise.
I've got to take things slowly otherwise I'll forget what I've been
learning which is why I'm only going to install Poser 7 on the Mac
when I first get it... I just want to get used to using a new system
y'know?
Oh yes, but you won't do that unless you actually *use* it, you know?
[snip]
Yep. Tell you what, take a look at:
<http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/index.shtml>
Can you remind me of that site when I've got the Mac... I'll never
remember otherwise!
<grin> No worries - it's my first port of call when I'm looking for a
bit of software to do a job. I'm unlikely to forget to mention it to
anyone who says `I've just got myself a Mac'.
[snip]
Apple supplies with each new Mac the software that you need to
enable you to do that very easily. You can have the MacOS, Linux,
Windoze, FreeBSD, frankly whatever you've got the space for - all
installed at the same time (not merely `dual boot'), and pick which
one you want to boot with when you start up. Or you could spend a
little extra on `Parallels Desktop', and be able to run the MacOS,
while having Linux and Windoze (etc) running `on top of that' in
their own windows. You're limited only by disc space.
And my inability to comprehend that paragraph! Surely you can only
have one OS running at a time can't you?
Not these days. The way it's done is that you have `one operating
system actually running the computer', and then if you want to run
another operating system, you use some special software that fools the
`extra operating system' into thinking that it's got a complete
computer to run on all to itself - except that's a lie, and the `extra
operating system' is being fooled by this special clever software
while the `operating system you booted with' is doing the real job of
really running the computer for you.
Oh right!
And strangely enough, it actually works very very well when done
properly. The CPUs that they're fitting to new PCs (and Macs) these
days have special circuitry built into them to make this sort of `OS
virtualisation' approach work more efficiently - it's the way of the
future, so it seems.
Cool!
That sort of approach was, I think, pioneered by IBM for its mainframe
computers back in the 1970s. It's called the `virtual machine'
approach - and there are all sorts of useful technical reasons for
using it.
It sounds like it!
But: with the standard software you get with a Mac, you only get to
run one OS at a time although you can pick whichever one you want when
you start up. To run multiple OSes at once, you need to buy a bit of
extra software. There are two main choices: one runs on Macs only,
the other one comes in Windoze and Linux versions too. Both let you
run almost any operating system under virtualisation (as they say
these days).
Groovy!
Rowland.
