We'll have to disagree about the compulsion element, but I hope

I'm trying to 'work' at the moment, but Windoze has just come up
with a bizarre "I'm nearly out of memory so save your work then
close all your windows" prompt that I've never seen before :(

Are you using a laptop by any chance? I used to get that message all
the time when using a laptop! The only way around it that I found
was a reboot! It's a pain when it happens several times a day but
that's the joy of being portable I guess!

It shouldn't be possible to get an error like that, unless you'e
running short of disc space ('cos the OS can `swap' RAM contents out
to disc in a scheme called virtual memory that all `serious' operating
systems use). At least, not with any sane operating system.

Linux won't give you any hassle like that, and Macs won't either.
It's only Microsoft Windoze that does that sort of thing. Ditch it!
You don't have to put up with all that crap, you really don't.
