I was taken to the original Ramsden's chippy up in the
Lancashire-Yorkshire border region (I forget exactly where it was) some
time in the '70s, and it was certainly a top-notch chippy. I haven't
visited any of the chain or franchise versions personally, but they do
look as though the hype has overtaken the quality.

I've tried it: the food they serve is unremarkable canteen-type stuff.
Why did I do it? Motorway service station, and seeking the lesser evil.

That's how the fast-food chains work; the general grimness of the
experience is reliably uniform and that familiarity is somehow more
comforting than risking the unknown. (But big lorries parked around a
small caff not on a motorway, is generally a good sign).

True, but if your journey involves belting down the M6, and your tank
range says `Hilton Park Services is where I have to stop', and you don't
know the places just off the motorway that'd be better - well, it's
fish-n-chips or burgers or the normal hot food counter.

At least the tea is usually decent.

Ah, well, my beat-up old Citroën 1.9 litre diesel gets almost 400 miles to
a tankfull :))

About what you can get from that diesel bike I'd like one of - but the
military version, not the civvy version, 'cos the military version has a
mechanical fuel pump and will keep running without any electrics at all.

There is much to be said for the A road method - but I like to make good
progress, especially when it's a long journey, and there's no faster way
of getting from here to Rebecca's mum's place than `motorway all the
way' aside from the first and last couple of miles. Yer bum goes numb,
mind.

Numb bumb is is something else I don't get from my Citroën <G> I don't
much like motorways, particularly the M4, but parts of the M5 and M6 are
quite invigorating.

I find motorway travel to be tedious in the extreme, but it gets you
there quickly. If I do a journey on A roads, I don't get numb bum (even
if the journey is one such that the motorway route would give me that
`wooden plank' feeling) - it's just that motorway riding involves you
just sat there not moving very much.

I keep thinking that I should get myself one of those 90mph diesel
bikes. I'm sure I'm enough of an old fart to be happy riding something
like that - it's just that, werl...

BMW make scooters with a roof,

I thought they'd stopped making the things?

and Piaggio make scooters with two wheels
at the front.

Isn't that more a trike than anything else?

I'd quite like to have go with one of the more modern
Messerchmitt-style bubble-cars.

I want to see the good electric ones turning up.
