Really?!? Cliff Richard or The Beatles...? Hmm, hard choice. Not!

The Beatles were involved in me going mad[1]. Cliff is less bad for the
mind. Cheery chappie just interested in entertaining people - why not?

Rowland.

[1] What sort of effect do you think `Tomorrow never knows' has on a
five year old who *thinks* about the lyrics? And continues to do so for
many years? And never mind the rest of that album.

The Beatles, Nirvana and Pink Floyd are three of the most, if not THE three
most overrated bands in history. Nirvana would've gotten nowhere if Kunt
Carbine hadn't been a pretty boy.

I have to disagree with all of that.

Let's take Nirvana: my other half saw 'em before they were famous.
Bloody marvellous, so she says (although being a girlie she's
susceptible, if you see what I mean; I'm not). Certainly the earlier
stuff's a damned sight more `proper' that when they hit the charts, and
maybe the band never would have had the hit(s?) without Cobain's
charisma - but I'm telling you that is a band that had it, really spot
on. I defy anyone to listen to `Negative Creep', look me in the eye,
and then tell me that Nirvana's success is due to Kurt being a pretty
boy. /Anyway/ - whether they like the style of not, *anyone* should
hear what the band had from that track.

The Beatles - well, I can't do 'em justice. Have you any idea how much
that band opened up pop and rock music? Any idea how many new things
they opened the world up to? You might not like 'em, but they were one
of the most musically talented and innovative pop/rock groups of all
time. This is not readily apparent if you listen to `Help'. But it is
apparent if you listen to the Revolver album afterwards (the one my
parents bought, 'cos it was the sophisticated one). And even if you've
got no time for that line of thinking, Tomorrow Never Knows is still the
sort of thing to turn impressionable young minds into something strange.

Pink Floyd? Sid Barrett aside, a bunch of pretentious art-school
wankers for sure. But once upon a time, they had Sid and they too
opened up part of the musical goodie box. They were pioneers - not as
broad in their artistic reach as the Beatles, but they were one of the
pioneers, those who led the way for the others to follow. They were
once up there with Hawkwind and the Social Deviants, for heaven's sake!
Gods of the pantheon - as recognised by all of West London (which is
where it was at, at the time).

Oh, and that cunt Jim morrison, he was a
cunt as well,

Yeah, okay. But he had a bit of talent, too. Just blew it.

him and the windows or whatever they were called. It's all
hype and marketing. And just don't get me started on Oasis. They are
lacklustre and pedestrian, at best.

I've got a rendition of the song `Carry me home' by AC/DC with, Bon
Scott on vocals. Who needs to listen to crap?

And while we're at it the Red Hot Chilli Peppers have two songs, a fast one
and a slow one, they just change the words around, moribund to say the
least.

Yeah, but at least they did two good songs. Have you ever come up with
*ONE* thing as good as their two songs? Don't be so quick to sneer.

Metallica became accountants just like every other band that's been
around too long, such as the Stones.

I thought that was how they started out, wasn't it? Metallica, that is.
They've never displayed any talent or love for the job - I always
assumed that they were just in it for the money with nothing but
contempt for the music and the fans.

For some reason, Lemmy seems to rather like 'em. Me? I've heard
Metallica do a Motorhead cover and Motorhead do a Metallica cover.
Metallica really shouldn't have given up their day jobs, and nor should
bloody Mick Jagger (just because he is - to use your colourful idiom - a
cunt).
