it's fiddly, the solder will melt into a ball, but won't necessarily go
into the threading. the cable i'm soldering is, like mentioned, tinsel.
It needs to have a squeaky clean metal surface to stick to. Cleaning
the wire in acid might have helped remove any surface oxidation. It's
also hard to get the `tinsel' strands to heat up - too bloody small.
A decent multicore flux solder is pretty much essential - the flux does
the last bit of cleaning off.
also getting the solder to stay rigidly stuck to the plug is annoying.
Clean surfaces, make sure all parts are hot before removing the iron,
and then keeping it still until set: that's the ticket.
