I had an operation a few years ago and the anaesthetist visited me beforehand and answered all my questions easing my worries. I was worried that I'd come round during surgery but he reassured me that wouldn't happen because they monitor you during surgery. And he popped round a day after surgery to make sure my pain was being kept at bay by the morphine etc.
My experiences of the NHS have always been ok.

I think it depends on the individual people as to what sort of experience you have. I've encountered both good and bad, unfortunately more of the latter.
