Rowland.

It is possible to die with dignity in an old folk's home and not all
of
them have residents 'suffering indignities and abuse'

From the point of view of some people, it is impossible to either live
or die with dignity in any `care home' of any sort.

Me, for example. I'd rather die in a ditch than die in a care home
even
if that does mean I miss five years of life.

And most of them do subject their residents to abuse if you look
closely
- some of it worse than others. The way the staff treat old folks in
care is nearly universally condescending even in the better places, and
one never has liberty to do what one wants to do unless it's what's
been
laid on by the `home'. Which means that since one size does not fit
all, many people will find the environment utterly unbearable.

that said i still feel sorry for tramps who die in a heap of rubbish
smelling of piss and everything else

Me too - but don't forget, a lot of them have chosen that path because
they'd rather die like that than live the alternative that's offered to
them.

Yes, it's dreadfully sad, but who are we to tell them that their choice
is wrong, or - much worse - force them to do what `society at large'
thinks is best for them?

I'm a strong advocate of self-determination for everyone no matter what
`the man on the Clapham omnibus' thinks of any given person's life
choices - just so long as the `life choice' doesn't involve doing bad
things to others.

It strikes me that politicians have a rough time in part because
whatever they do, they can't avoid doing harm to *some* people. Other
reasons for them having a rough time are that they lie and weasel and
break promises and take bribes and so on and so forth - but some of the
hassle they get is a bit unreasonable.

Mind you, politicians will point out that one reason they lie and weasel
so much is that if they actually told the truth, they'd be flayed alive
by `the media' - which is true enough.

On the other hand, a few of 'em seem to be able to get away with the
truth (if not the whole truth) - mavericks like Tony Benn, and
old-fashioned decent types like Michael Foot. But it's notable that the
most honest major political party we've got is the Lib Dems, and when
did *they* last hold office?

Rowland.

it seeems hard to believe that someone could be so miserable that they would
prefer to die in a heap of rubbish alone than give up any freedom at all,
but all politicians ask us people to give up some of our freedoms, the lib
dems too.

i can't say i have many freedoms myself, as I have discovered that control
lies mainly with others. This I have had to accept, short of doing anything
drastic.

i think people can be bloody unpleasant at times, and maybe the tramp is in
the pile of rubbish in clothes that smell of piss, becuase he isn't a very
nice person and no-one can really bear to help him. I have found out that
the authorities are not obliged to help, and as they point out, get paid
whether they're of any help or not

i think when it comes down to it, it is a choice between accepting the help,
and limitations on freedom that come with it, or not getting the help or the
freedom you want either. It's a bad deal for most, and all we get is a vote
now and then. what a joke
