I was wrong, sort of, sorry about that. I spoke to a NHS Direct pharmacist today who has sent me information on SJW and apparently, a GP can "prescribe" it but what that means is you still have to buy it but the GP gives you a prescription detailing the amount of active ingredient you require from the brand of SJW for it to have the potential to treat depression. So you take that prescription to your outlet of choice.
The pharmacist said;
St John's Wort is a herbal medicine whose active constituents provide the action against depression. The amounts of active constituent depend on the growth, harvesting and processing of the plant; plus the subsequent manufacture and formulation of the product. Therefore there is wide variation in activity between the different formulations.
