Umm...... Really? Maybe - I think I've heard rumours about some of the
Italian jobbies, but apparently yer Yamaha FS1E was the `normal' fastest
moped, and they generally topped out at about 60mph from what I've been
told despite the bollocks the riders spoke - then again, they probably
just read their speedos. The mpg wasn't good when they were tuned up,
but one gathers that didn't matter because the engine would probably
explode before you'd emptied the tank...

Jaguar E type? And there were plenty of ton-up bikes come the 1950s.
Plenty of bikes that ought to have been capable of that sort of speed
but couldn't any more 'cos they'd not been maintained properly, too.
And plenty that could hit a ton but you wouldn't want to on account of
the brakes, suspension, frame, and whatnot. Sometimes due to dodgy
design (Japanese, mostly); sometimes due to things wearing out (Brit and
Italian mostly). BMWs have always been BMWs...
