The last thing you want to do at this point is to quit your job -
especially if you think it's responsible for your condition. First and
foremost, go the sickness route, that ensures you'll receive Statutory Sick
Pay (depending on how long you've been employed) and/or Incapacity Benefit.
As long as you provide sick notes, you are protected from being sacked.
Every company has a different sickness policy and I don't think you have to
tell them in detail why you can't come to work (for now). Maybe you can ask
your mum to call in sick for you that would save you some awkward
explaining. Depending on the size of your company, they might have their
own Health & Safety Dept and those guys may want to get in touch with you
to find out more. But I think that won't happen before 2 or 3 months into
an absence from work. Or, they'll ask you to sign a consent form so that
they can obtain a medical report from your GP.
Next thing is, go to your GP and tell him/her exactly what's going on and
how you're feeling. There's absolutely nothing embarrassing about admitting
that you feel stressed/burnt out, overwhelmed and depressed due to the job
situation, it's getting more and more common and you're not the only one.
Now, re work/illness, you might want to think about why you feel that the
job is making you ill or why it's responsible for your condition. You might
want to look into the option of taking legal action against your employer.
By law, employers have a responsibility to ensure a safe work environment
(physically & psychologically) and if they don't provide it, they can be
held legally responsible (which means they're also responsible for their
employees' actions - in case you feel bullied or harassed by your work
mates). One more reason to think hard whether it was due to the work
conditions you became ill. If the employer doesn't know about it, your
chances of winning any legal claim are slim because they will say they
weren't aware and thus unable to make necessary changes to better the
situation.
So, however impulsive you might feel right now, quitting is a definite
no-no!! Hell, in my outpatient group therapy last year, I met people who'd
been off sick for over a year and still in employment!
