The reason I ask is this old laptop is slow to start up and I found that
if I put it on Stand By with Firefox and Outlook Express still open.
The next time I start the old girl up. Everything comes up straight
away.

Firefox has always been slow to start.

Bill P?

I put mine in standby once by mistake when I left the office. Stuck it
in the bag & took it home. When I got home parts of it were too hot to
touch, I was (pleasantly) surprised when I switched it on after
cooling to find it still worked. So yes, it's using power for
something in Standby. Hibernate might be better, there's a discussion
about it here:

I always use hibernate on my netbook. It seems to switch everything off
and I presume from that it doesn't drain the battery.

Thanks Peter and FN.
One of the things I would worry about is overheating. It seems that it could
overheat using Stand By.
I almost never use the laptop on battery power. It is always plugged into
the mains. Except when the son wants to borrow it.
I suppose Hibernate would be usefull during the day.
Its the slow start up that is buggin me.
