I suppose it may even be possible ( but I dunno) for it to go haring
off and changing stuff without your say so.

Merging reg files adds their contents to the registry, overwriting any
existing values for the same key(s). That's changing stuff.

The registry can run any existing executable file, including dlls, at
start-up, and possibly at other times.

I don't know, but it is conceivable, that the registry could run arbitary
code derived from a reg file.

So, yes, it could go haring off and changing stuff.

I knew about what happens when a .reg file is merged, was taught a long time
ago to make sure that the default action for .reg files was NOT under any
circumstances 'merge' ( so it doesn't go do stuff when you just ordinary
click on it). SO mine is set to 'edit' and to open with notepad. its been so
long I forget what the default action is in windows.
Next lesson was right click, open in notepad, read what it says. Go look (
carefully, cos its a scary place) in the registry and see what's in there
now. Export the relevant keys ( or the whole registry to be sure). Now
decide if you know what effect its going to have if you merge it. If you
don't know - ask till you do know! Stand on one leg, with your trousers
rolled up and only when you have done all the preparation are you allowed to
take a big breath and merge the damn thing !

I know Mike knows what he is doing and is really good with poota stuff, just
wanted to put in 2ps worth for anyone who doesn't know.
Way back when, I learned a lot by reading posts about what folk did and
didn't do with their pcs, I suppose other folk do the same, so its not a bad
thing for the resident numpty ( me) to give her perspective on things. I can
cope with things like the registry etc etc now, but I still very rarely
download stuff from the web.
On the other hand, <g> at one time I messed about with core operating files
at the drop of anyone's hat . TNML used to feel faint at the very thought of
some of the things I did just for fun. Oh I do wish he had left a forwarding
address, I miss him.
