Re: No sound from onboard audio controller

neighbours I set her new computer up for her and kept it up to
scratch afterwards. Recently her HD failed and she had it replaced. I
talked her through installing XP, SP3 again and installing her other
software. She has now reported that she gets the initial sounds when
windows boot up but cannot get any other sound from CD's etc.
I managed to get her to do various checks and it comes up no sound
device installed. I got her into BIOS set-up Integrated Peripherals
and it shows that her onboard AC97 audio controller is set to Auto.
Device manager lists audio codecs etc but does not mention the AC97
and nothing seems to have a yellow exclamation mark against it.
I can't remember if when I initially set up her system if XP
installed the audio drivers or if I had to used her motherboard disk
to do it. At the moment she is hunting for her motherboard disk.
Anyone use onboard sound and have a suggestion? I found an initial
problem with incompatible drivers after loading SP3 with my oldish
sound card. No rush for an answer as she will be off to sunnier climes for
C'mas
and New Year.

First thing I'd check is that the jack plug is pushed into the right port.
The green one usually, in a bank of 3 (pink green blue)
I've seen many push theirs into a modem microphone socket.

Second thing I'd check is Control Panel/Classic view/sounds and audio
devices/audio tab and check the drop down box to make sure it's not wrongly
selected to modem or other incorrect device.

Thirdly, switch to volume tab first and check volume, and then select sounds
tab and make sure you have a scheme selected.

If these don't wxrk, I'd have to have a look at it.

Give me a call when you're free :-)
