If a word is misspelled in the dictionary, how would we ever know?
We'd look in another dictionary. If they all agree, then it's spelled
right even it it shouldn't be.
Why are a "wise man" and a "wise guy" opposites?
Why do "slow down" and "slow up" mean the same thing?
because the preposition is irrelevent - theyall just mean SLOW.
Why is it called "after dark" when it is really "after light"?
It used to be 'after darkfall'
Doesn't "expecting the unexpected" make the unexpected expected?
Yes
Why do "overlook" and "oversee" mean opposite things?
They don't.
Why do they call it a TV "set" when it is only one item?
It used to be a whole set of valves,
How come abbreviated is such a long word?
They'd used all the short ones.
I'm sure you must all have similar thoughts
Every time this comes around.
