The Manager of the flats here where I live had a look at my laptop this morning but could not make it work he asked if I had downloaded Pack 3 - I believe I did - he says something to do with HP and Compaq and would have to download a `repair`. Have you heard about this?
I hope to take it in for repair later this week when I feel well enough and have got over my ear infection.

If you downloaded SP3 and all was well for a time there is no reason for it to conflict now. If you can't get into the system you can't download the repair nor uninstall SP3 if that were the cause. It is a good idea to keep a computer diary and note major changes that you download or when you install new software.
There was evidently an HP + SP3 conflict see below and HP and Microsoft issued fixes but you should have been offered the HP one automatically even if you ignore MS updates. I tend to tire of HP offering me updates:-)

Thank you for that - I have e-mailed Microsoft regarding the problem and will let you know the result.

Microsoft can be quite helpful. Without your installation disk can you quote them the Serial no/KeyGen. That is always their first question and they used not to support OEM versions installed by suppliers where you are only issued with a back up disk.
After the computer supplier of one of my old machines went out of business I phoned MS about a problem. It turned out that my copy of Win95, not preinstalled though legal was a gray import and should only have been sold in Canada. They still helped out on the problem.

Thankfully my laptop problem has been solved thanks very much to pmj who used to post in here. Fortunately he still keeps up with the newsgroups and saw I had problems and he came to my home and managed to fix the problem. Service pack 3 had corrupted my laptop and made it crash. After a further search indoors I found my installation disk that came with my computer and with other disks that he brought with him after about 2 hours he was able to get it working again. He also made sure on my computer that it does not install updates automatically but to ask before installing, that is very important and something I did not realise.
