Have you checked in Task Manager on the processes tab to see if there are
any avg processes running?
I have avgwdsvc.exe, avgtray.exe, aAVGApi.exe, avgemc.exe, avgrsx.exe
running at the moment.,

I've got avgtray (that'll be the systray icon) and avgrsx.exe and avgui
(that's the user interface0 but nothing else. The Update Now button,
doesn't seem to have any effect - not even an attempt at downloading
anything.
