Do you know if household water comes from two sources. We had a situation in
Edinburgh a few years ago where the water from the mains tap was normal
yukky Edinburgh but that which came out the cold bath tap and flushed the
toilet was brown. It was over quite a big area for months so was not down to
the water storage for our flats.
Given that most properties only have one mains pipe in (in my case feeding
just one tap and the tank in the roof), that sounds more like a storage
problem. The bath and toilet water would be fed from tanks in the roof.
*All* the cold water taps in this house are mains fed - kitchen and toilet,
bath, basin and shower. The hot water cylinder is topped up from the header
tank in the loft which is also mains fed.
