Re: Dare I ask an avg 8 question? Latest, it's sorted :-) (was: Dare I ask an avg 8 question?)

thought carefully and then said:

My father in law is having problems with sending mail since updating to
AVG8. I've been on the phone to him for an hour but it is very hard as he
is not at all computer literate, so its slow and painful getting him to
move around to check things. He can no longer send emails and is getting an
error message that says (something like) AVG cannot send from this address
and includes something about SSL. I *know* that is terribly vague but he is
also quite deaf and getting him to quote the error message *exactly* is
hard to say the least.
I've got him as far as looking in Outlook Express account details and there
*was* a tick in account properties/Advanced to say This server requires a
secure connection. He has tried it without the tick but that doesn't work.
The problem is his settings are different to mine as I use my own smtp
server, so I can't compare with mine. The smtp port is set to 25.
He's sending from a gmail account within Outlook Express (which was all
working happily prior to the update to AVG 8 so I can't tell what has been
changed)

Any clues as to what has gone wrong. I can't rule out that he has 'fiddled'
with something, although he says he hasn't.

It means a two hour trip if I have to go there to sort it, so any advice
that would enable me to sort it over the phone would be much appreciated.

Just in case anyone is interested, I have now sorted this problem. To keep
it short, for anyone that can understand these bits in OE I set the pop
server to pop.gmail.com Port 995 (SSL) and the smtp to relay.plus.net Port
25 (which is not what AVG tell you to do but it works for me/him)
In AVG Server settings, pop.gmail.com:995 Local Port 5200 SSL and smtp to
smtp.gmail.com Port 587 Local Port 5200 and SSL Default.

It took a lot of fiddling around and uninstalling my own mail server before
I could work out the right port settings etc but it is now all working
again and he is happily emailing all the family. Phew!
