You were lucky. My first Infants school still used slates for everything.
Also a "squeaky" blackboard that had bare patches from use.
In the last week of the last term I was there just before I left they got
the new pens and inkwells but not to be used until the new term started.

We had desks with inkwells in in the second year juniors.
We still wrote in pencil in our books but we had a special pen and ink book
in which we wrote every Friday.
Why only once a week I just don't know!
That went on for a term then for terms two and three we were moved
individually towards writing in ink in all our books.
So by third year juniors everything was in pen and ink - well, except
drawings ;-))
