We had slates for *playing* with, in the Infant school, I grant you that!
But our writing was done with pencils and on real paper!

That school was extremely new when I went.
You would wonder how they could build a new school during the war, wouldn't you?
It wasn't there when my two older brothers started school.
And how come they had everything they needed?
I remember my pencil - it had a knife-shaving at the top and the teacher had written "Pam" in ink on it.
A pencil with my name on it and I wasn't yet 5, so proud I was ;-))

You were lucky. My first Infants school still used slates for everything. Also a "squeaky" blackboard that had bare patches from use.
In the last week of the last term I was there just before I left they got the new pens and inkwells but not to be used until the new term started.
