Charities [Rant]

I have sent occasional donations to a registered medical
charity. Now they send me daffodil bulbs.
A middle aged acquaintance of mine with no
military experience has joined a national organisation for
ex-service-men and -women.
"You should join" he said."The beer is subsidised and you
can get good meals cheap.
"There's not so many eligible these days so they have
introduced an Associate Membership category to keep
the income coming in.
Subsidised beer and cheap meals? I shall continue to give
of course but I'll probably remember those words as well
as what I'm supposed to remember.
Almost every week we get a plastic bag through the
letter box asking for unwanted clothing for some genuinely
deserving cause, but the amount that goes to the needy
from the proceeds of the sale is tiny after the organisers
take their cut.So we take our unwanted stuff to the Salvation
Army collection points now. They are genuine.
Greeting cards the same but the Charities are glad of anything.
Much better to give direct to them, and buy the cards you like.
Sam
