I need to show a series of thumbnails and pictures on the community web site I am working on. Is there an optimal size for pictures on the web? I am creating thumbnails 200 pixels wide so people can see enough to know of they want to see the picture but some of the actual pictures are gi-normous. They do get scaled in the browser but only once it has down-loaded the pic. I thought perhaps a standard width of around 800 pixels for all pictures might be about right?

I try to keep jpg pictures under 100kb in size. I've just uploaded 363 pictures to my site. The web album generator produces a thumbnail picture 2kb to 3kb for each picture plus a HTML file 2kb in size.
My pictures are currently mainly 640x480. I'm still playing about with it before getting rid of older system I've been using. You can see it here:- <http://wakefield.110mb.com/wakefieldpics/>
