benchmark but why will other statisticians come up with contradicting
stats?

Because they will bw reading the logs of a different website, with a
different mix of users.

Is there an acid test?

Yes, but the Aqua Regia dissolves (nearly) everything, not just gold.

Its a bit like arguing that grass is not green because ivy is green.
If they are both green, then green must be a vague term.
If web stats are 'vague', are they meaningful?

They can be, showing trends, Just don't put too much faith in the detail.
