Alma, having carefully considered all the angles, harangued us with the following:
My poota just died last week-end and I could not get Dell techies until Monday, spent hours with the techies based in India who checked the hard drive - tried reinstalling Windows and ended up scrubbing the hard drive and reinstalling windows. Have lost loads of stuff and am now trying to get things back into shape.
But it looks like I am back:-))

Which is precisely why a regular back-up routine is so important. Any computer can 'die' unexpectedly and sometimes, even if the problem isn't terminal it's necessary to format the hard drive and re-install the OS from scratch - losing all your stuff in the process. And if the problem is terminal, and the computer needs to be replaced, an up-to-date backup means you can put all your stuff onto the new machine and still access/use it.
Even burning the entire contents of you 'My documents' folder onto a CD or DVD weekly or monthly is well worth while. If you have other folders with vital stuff in them include them too. Using a dedicated 'back- up program will make the nack-up and restore tasks easier help the process and save disk space but you don't absolutely need one.
