I'm begining to think that I'm out of step with you lot!

march to the beat of your own drum - I do :-)

I have skype, yahoo messenger & windows live messenger installed, but
they are never "on" unless I need to use them.

I sorta do that too, but often they are running and if I see someone pop
up I will talk. A bit like the phone is always plugged in, if someone
rings and I am able to get there in time ( lol not on the loo or summat)
I will answer it

Also very few people, even on ups know my usernames.

Well for a lot of us, we 'discovered' this stuff at about the same time,
so we tended to use it a lot when it was a novelty, so e.g I have oodles
of people on my contact list, Some I rarely speak to , cos my time is at
a premium, but its nice to have a way of contacting them if I have a
need to.

As for voice comms, is messenger always crap quality?
No, but it can be a bit hit and miss ( mostly miss for me now cos I use
something which doesn't have voice capability)

Skype, especially long distance, is as good as normal telephony, at
least from here, but messenger = yuk.

Skype has been good, I get decent voice quality to both other pootas and
to landline/mobile phones.

Also, why do people insist on use their keyboards to "chat" when
head-sets are so cheap, & talking is so much quicker than typing?

Not sure that 'insist' is the right expression :-)
Depends on how you use it I suppose. I often 'chat' to people whilst we
are both doing other stuff. ~~Linda~~ and I are old hands at it. We
leave the chat window open and type as and when we have summat to say or
have time in between cooking etc <g> May take a while to get a reply if
the other person is doing something, but that's ok by us.
