I would advise using 'Windows Live Messenger' rather than Windows Messenger. Microsoft themselves recommend that course of action and actually stopped further development of 'Windows Messenger' a while back in favour of 'Live Messenger'. There are many people who consider 'Windows Messenger' to be a security risk.

It looks very, very similar to WM but it's a totally different program.
If you go with 'Windows Live Messenger' you should probably disable 'Windows Messenger'. See here:
