Re: L modem/router problem

I took advantage of the poor weather this afternoon and did a format
and re-installation of Windows XP SP2 on my PC. As soon as Windows
had finished installing itself it connected to the Internet and got
78 updates :-)

It's usually a good idea to make sure the PC isn't Connected to the
Router (&/or the Router isn't Connected to the Internet), until *after*
you've finished the Installation & Setting it up, (& Installing of Anti
Virus stuff etc,) then you can make sure that it's properly Set up
(with the right Hardware/Software etc,) & protected, before Connecting
to the Internet (& also, it's a good idea to turn off the Automatic
Updates, at least to begin with), so you can decide exactly when
& which Updates to Install.

You don't want a nice new, working Installation being screwed up
immediately by some Update that turned out to have bugs in it, do you?

However I cannot connect using my browser (at the moment I'm using
IE7 as I have yet to re-install Firefox). It keeps wanting to try
and connect via dial-up.

& that's another reason why it's a good idea to go through the various
Settings, *before* you let it Connect to (or before you try to Connect
to) the Internet...

Any sensible suggestions gratefully received :-))

Like the others say - the Setting you need to Set for that (even if
you are using a different Web Browser, such as Firefox) is actually
in Internet Explorer!!!

All (properly designed/written) Applications/Utilities should use/
honour the Connection Settings for the System that are Set in windoze
& the Connection Settings in windoze are Set using the "Internet
Options" in Internet Explorer.

Look on the "Connections" Tab & make sure it's Set to "Never Dial
a Connection" - That Option isn't Ticked by Default, cos in the days
when windoze/Internet Explorer was first designed most people, used
Dial Up Connections, so many people would want it to Dial Up, if an
Internet Connection was needed by something.

But these days many (most?) people use a Broadband Connection
of some kind - ADSL, Cable Modem &/or through a Router...

& so *don't* want it to try & Dial Up - but that Option isn't Set
by Default, so you need to Set it yourself (along with all the
various other Options, where the Default Settings aren't what you
actually want or need)
