<huge snip>

I only asked on the offchance that someone in here may say Oh yes,
the error 1040, press button B and you will fix it and get your money
back ( it 'does' happen sometimes and is always worth a shot LOL)

Ah!

Yes.
OK.
Sorry I can't help with a "One Click" Answer to the prob.
(at least not without some more Info about it - which was why I asked
the other Q's, so as to be able to come up with a more immediately
helpful Reply)

Did you read the bit about how to find out if the TCP/IP (Internet/
Networking) stuff on the Machine is actuall ystill OK (& hasn't been
screwed up by the failed Installation)?

yes pmj, I read every word, I always do.

Great...

Can he Ping his own Machine?

He wouldn't know a ping from a pong

He doesn't need to!
:-)

All he needs to do is to follow the suggestion/guidance/instructions
& say what happens, when he does it.

It's for the people who *do* "know a ping from a pong" <g> to be able
to interpret the results & then come up with the next stage in the
process for him to do.

... ( he aint stoopid, just not very au fait with pootas atm)

I suspected that.
But that won't stop him (or you/us or anybody0 from being able to sort
it all out.

Which is why I included the way for him to find out if he *can* Ping
his own Machine (in other words, check that the basic TCP/IP Networking
Stack is all working properly & hasn't been screwed up by the failed
Installation.

Also, when he has tried doing that, he'll be in a postion to then
do other stuff to help get the prob sorted out.

I'm sure he'll find it much easier to do things like the "ping"
when someone like you explains it (passing on the Info from these
sort of Posts), rather than him trying to follow some Indian Help
Line person's Instructions, over the Phone.

Start>Run cmd /k ping 127.0.0.1 [OK]

yes I saw that

Good!
So, can you please ask him to do it?
& to tell you what happens?

Next time he is at his Dad's I will get his Dad to try connecting
it to the router there, via the ethernet cable. If we can do that
then I can use net meeting to 'see' it and have a better idea of
what is what.

Yep.

snip the rest of the questions. I know you are trying to help,
and its lovely of you, but this isn't a problem I am having.

I realise that!
It's a problem someone *else* is having, isn't it?

It is a third person who wants it to work , but so does he and we
can only communicate when neither of us are running round our
respective hamster wheels.

Fair enough!

I asked (you) the (supplementary) Q's so that (when you next
contact him) you can ask him them (& ask him to do the "ping" thingy
I mentioned) & then he can tell you the answers to them (& what happens
when he does the "ping" thingy), which will then Help mim/you/us to get
it all sorted out.

Patience Grasshopper, if I have contact from him I will ask again
and you can play:-)

Well, I dunno about "playing"...
:-)

I thought you (he) just wanted to get it sussed out & working,
so I was trying to avoid all the various "playing" type stuff we
could do <g>

& I was just asking the specific Q's (such as what Make & Model
of Modem & Computer it is & what Operating System & Version/Service
Pack it is) that need to be answered, so as to suss it out.

I realise you don't have any time these days to do various other sorts
of interesting "Playing around" - Errr... Sorry I mean "Investigating
& experimenting".

What do you reckon about my alternative suggestion (if he doesn't have
the time or knowledge or inclination to find out how to sort out the
USB Modem Driver Installation prob) of just getting a different ADSL
Modem/Router, that has an Ethernet Connection? - They can be bought
for less than 30 Quid (& less than 20 Quid, in some cases), these days.

Does that sound a practical/quick/easy/cheap way to sort the prob out?
(in the absence of a "Press Button B" type Solution)
:-)
