Friend has signed up. usb modem and cd arrived, line actvated
and checked by BT

Is this a completely new ADSL Connection on that Phone Line?

yes, but BT have checked it

OK - I asked, so as to find out if he had already (previously,
at some time) had an ADSL Internet Connection (maybe with another
ISP) on that Line.

If he had, there are several things that can very easily be done
to suss it all out.

& if he hasn't (which I gather is the case now, from your reply),
there are various *other* things that can (relatively) easily be
done so as to suss it all out.

What Make & Model of Modem is it?

No idea

Can you find out please?

When we know what Make & Model the Modem is, we can easily suss out
the best/quickest/easiest/cheapest way to get it Installed & working
properly.

The Make & Model Number of the Modem will be on a Label on the
bottom of it...

I mention that, cos (apparently) some people think it's ever so
complicated & difficult to find the Make & Model Number - & they
just look at the writing on the front of it, which doesn't say the
actual Make & Model Number.

Can you find out what the actual Error Message was?
& also, at what point "part way through" in the Installation
it failed.

I tried but understandably he was a bit punch drunk by that tme,
the help line person had given him lots of instructions and he
had forgotten what it was he had done

Fair enough.

I just thought that if we knew where (i.e at what point) in the
Installation, it failed, that might help to suss it out.

But never mind - the Modem can be Installed OK with out knowing that.

<huge snip>

Did you read the bit about how to find out if the TCP/IP (Internet/
Networking) stuff on the Machine is actuall ystill OK (& hasn't been
screwed up by the failed Installation)?

Can he Ping his own Machine?

Start>Run cmd /k ping 127.0.0.1 [OK]

Next time he is at his Dad's I will get his Dad to try connecting
it to the router there, via the ethernet cable. If we can do that
then I can use net meeting to 'see' it and have a better idea of
what is what.

Yep.

& if he can't get it to Connect OK to the Router using the Ethernet
Connection (&/or in the meantime), can you find out/confirm what
Operating System it is?

I think you said in another Reply that it wasn't Vista, but is WinXP?
& if it is WinXP, what Service Pack? None, SP1 or SP2?
& is it WinXP Home Edition? Or WinXP Pro? Or WinXP Media Centre
Edition (which, if it's a Packard Bell Laptop it might be).

WinXP MCE is based on WinXP Pro - we only need to know which Version
(& Service Pack) he's using, cos some of the things to use/do are in
slightly different places & work slightly differently.

When we know that (& the Make & Model Number of the Modem), we can
come up with a way of sussing it out & getting the Modem Drivers
Installed OK (& with a bit of luck<g>) when we know the Model Number
of the Modem, we may find out that it's actually got an Ethernet
Connection (as well as a USB Connection) on it! In which case it will
all be *very* easy to sort out!
:-)
