My local supermarket had gammon steaks on offer today. I picked up a
packet from the chilled bacon section only to find it solid. It was frozen
and so were a lot of others. Some were starting to thaw. Now it says on
the packet Suitable for freezing. I was there at 8 o'clock. Anyone coming
later in the day would not know that these had been frozen and
theoretically could refreeze them. I spoke to an assistant who showed the
dairy manager. I told him of my concerns, but he was not bothered. He said
that head Office said it was OK!!!!. So unusual for me - I told him I
certainly would not be buying them and would take the matter further. He
did not care and more or less shrugged his shoulders. Red rag to a bull
that is. Was going to try and see the store manager, but the queue at
customer services was so long. So got home and rang Trading Standards for
advice who agreed with my point on refreezing and said they will
investigate and let me know. So then emailed customer services. Not heard
back from either yet. But am I right in that you should not refreeze
things?

No, Shaz. Food that had formally been frozen, then defrosted by
supermarkets, should definitely NOT be refrozen in my opinion.. It goes
against all food safety requirements....I can imagine the bulk of folk
wouldn't even think of that and buy only to re-freeze again..

I was at the supermarket myself yesterday and noticed that a 'Thai Exotic
Prawn Dip' was marked down from $4 99 to $3...I was about to put it in my
trolley ,but I noticed that the use by date was 1st June 07...And here it
was the 8th June (in Oz) .. I checked the other dates and they were all the
same use by date.... I spoke to the seafood manager and told him that it was
illegal to sell anything past a day before use by date..Of course, when he
came over and checked them, he said it was the responsibility of another
dept to keep a check on dates before marking them down !... AND it was
'Seafood' at that, which is especially dangerous to eat when out of date !

It's not the first time it has happened to me !
