Seems like I can post via Google groups....
<snip various reasons why usin gGoogle groups for Posting to
(& reading) newsgroups isn't the bets way & some of the probs>

Hello PMJ
Yes - I put the "Re" in myself .....

Ah, I thought so.
How come you did that then?
Cos it wasn't a Reply to any Post, was it?

Yes, the "Re:" in Message Replies originated from the use of the
word "Reference" (or the abbreviation "WRT" - "With Respect To"),
which was used in Paper type Letetrs & memos.

But in Electronic Messages, such as emails & News Posts, that job
is done by the "Subject: " Headerit self - the "Re: " bit signifies
(to people reading the messages & to the newsreader Software that
they use), that the Message is a Reply to a previous Message & the
"References: " header of the Message(s) contains the Info about
*which* particular messages are being Replied to.

Remeber, with Electronic Messages, they are bein gseen by loads of
different people, all over the world, using various different methods
& at varying times, (& sometimes, some of the Messages may not be
available), so all thsoe sort of things help people to follow the
"Threads" & make sense of the Discussion/Conversation.

Getting back to the Mac thing... Will I need to post to this
group via gmail or will there be other ways ?

You won't *need* to!
Though yes, you would be able to, if you wanted to.
& if you didn't have something more suited.

Will I need a paid up subscription ?

Nope.

At the bottom of my email in O/E there was an option called
Search newsgroups - there was a wholde list of them.

Yep.
A proper, Dedicated Newsreader, such as OutLook Express has plenty
of features & facilities to make finding & reading the Messages
in Newsgroups easy.

A Web based thing like Google Groups is only ever a 2nd best way
of doing it.

O/E even sent me a message to say - You are not subscribed to any
groups - would you like to download a list of groups now ?

Yep.
(See above)

The prob (as you may have realised) is that OutLook Express doesn't
come with APple Mac OS X, unlike the way it comes with windoze.
It *used* to be supplied with previosu versions of the Apple
Operating System.

But as it stands now, Apple OS XS doesn't come with any NNTP
Newsreader (as r@y said, the Apple Mail thingy is only for eMails
& not for NNTP Newsgroups.)

But there are plenty of other, 3rd party NNTP News Clients available
for it, since you're used to OutLook express, you may well find that
the Mozilla Thunderbird eMail Client & Newsreader wil lsuit you OK.

That's how I got into groups in the first place.

Ah yes, but actually that was only cos your *ISP* (at that time)
had preloaded the News Server Account details into it!

By Default, OE doesn't come with any News server details in it.
You normally have to find them out & Enter them manually, which may
be why so many people these days don't know about NNTP Newsgroups
& Usenet & they end up having to make do with Web based "Forums",
not knoiwing that there are *far* better ways of doing things.

I must say that I would miss "groups" .. I have come to enjoy all
the laugh's and the chat too !!!!

Well, like r@y says, have a look around & try out some of the various
different Newsreader Clients that are available for Apple Mac OS X.

They will all work with your *existing* News Server Account.
All you have to do is to Enter the News Server Name & your Logon
Details to Access it (if your News Server Account requires you to
Log on to (Authenticate with) it).

HTH
