Those 20 Inch iMacs are nice though, aren't they?

& the Screen Resolution is a decent 1680 x 1080, so you'll get very
clear text & Pics on it.

Yep, that is (often, though not always) to be expected.
They (like many people) only want to see the *results* available
from a computer (or the Internet) they aren't interested in how
it's done, or what it's done with.

Mind you it was a different story last week when she was doing
a project for her art class and needed some information on Turner's
works...... one click on the Google and up it all came ... I was
a "Hero" for a few minutes......

Yep, but pretty much *any* Computer can do that can't it? - you don't
need an Apple Mac to do it.

Then there was the time she wanted a route from here to Milton
Keynes printed out for her..... "another" few minutes of Glory.......

Once she learns how to use a Web Browser she'll be able to do that
sort of thing for herself, won't she?

I wonder if she'll want to learn how to use a Web browser, on this
new Computer?

Something I was going to ask you, when you mentioned about getting
a new Computer (PC Laptop, Apple MacBook Pro (or now the Apple iMac),
was have you thought about how you are going to Connect it to the
Internet?
& do you want to have it Connected to the Internet at the same time
as any other Computers that you have?

It's all very easy actually - usually(!)...
But a lot will depend on what sort of Internet Connection you have.

Do you have an ADSL Internet Connection? (or a Cable Modem)

I thought you had a Freeserve/Wanadoo/Orange (ADSL) Connection?
But I see you are using a BTInternet eMail Address.
& you're Posting from a BTInternet Connection at the mo...

It doesn't really matter though which particular ISP you are using
(or whether it's an ADSL Connection or a Cable Modem Connection)...
What *does* matter, is what kind of Modem you have...

If you only have a USB Modem, then you may have probs getting it to
work with an Apple Mac, cos not all USB Modems have Drivers available
for Macs.

But if the Modem has an *Ethernet* Connection, then it will work
fine, no probs with an Apple Mac.

You just Plug it in & away you go!

What Make (& Model) of Modem do you have at the moment?

Is it an (Alcatel) SpeedTouch?
Or a BT (GlobeSpan Virata) Voyager?

Both of those are available in Versions that are only USB, or that
have Ethernet Connections.

If you Post up the Make (& Model) of it, we can soon see if it will
work OK with an Apple Mac.

& if you want to have any other Computer Connected up to the Internet
as well as your shiny new Apple iMac, then you'll need a Router of
some kind.
Either one with an Ethernet Connection, or one with WiFi, will be OK,
cos the iMac has WiFi built-in.

& You *may* find that you already have an ADSL Modem that has
a built-in Router!
:-)

If you have (for example) a Freeserve/Wanadoo/Orange Livebox,
or a BT Home Hub, then they are an ADSL Modem with built-in Router
& WiFi in them.

So you'll be able to just Plug it in & it will work straight off
(or use the built-in WiFi Connection that the Apple iMac has).
